HISTORY & ACTIVITIES


The STFA was officially registered in Singapore on 24th September 1992 with the following objectives:

* To create and foster close understanding between the peoples of Singapore
and Turkey.

* To promote and exchange cultural activities between the two countries.

Over the years the Association embarked on numerous activities and projects, some of which are listed herewith:

Nov 1992 A promotional seminar on Turkey jointly with the Turkish Airlines at the Singapore Hilton for 300 people from the travel & hospitality industries.

Jan-Mar 1993 Co-organizer and co-sponsor of a FAM trip to Turkey with Turkish Airlines and Orion-Tour, Istanbul for 350 people from the travel & hospitality industries.

April 1994 Organized the Asean Food Festival jointly with Singapore-Airlines, Orion-Tour and Holiday Inn, Crown Plaza in Istanbul. Sponsored an art exhibition of fine paintings by Turkish artist, Ms. Evin Kirea in Singapore.

Sept 1994 Co-sponsored Singapore journalist Ms. Tong Suit Chee to Turkey to write on business travel in Turkey.
Organized and sponsored a performance by international Turkish flute soloist Ms. Sefika Kuthluer and Singapore pianist Mr. Shane Thio.

Dec 1994 Co-sponsored Raffles Girls' Secondary School Choir to perform at the Hyatt Regency, Istanbul.

Mar 1995 Held a tea celebration jointly with the Tea Cultural Society and The Urasenka Singapore Association.

April 1995 Sponsorship of the 49-member strong Jurong Primary School Brass Band to participate in the 17th International Children's Festival in Ankara and a performance at a charity concert in Istanbul to raise funds for the Darussafaka Foundation. The Association embarked on such a project with the firm belief that it will:

* Enable young & talented Singaporeans to compete internationally and gain experience.

* Foster goodwill and understanding among the children of the world.

* Inculcate a sense of service and humanity in our young citizens to the needy and the under-priveleged.

August 1996 Organized and sponsored a Public Exhibition cum Forum by Professor Dr. Seyti Karabas on Nasreddin Hodja and a Performance of Turkish Bardic Tradition by Mr. Seref Tasliova at th eMandarin Hotel.

August 1998 Organized a FAM trip of the Black Sea area jointly with the Information and Tourism office of the Turkish Embassy and Orion-Tour.

August 1999 Led the first Singapore team to Turkey under "Love Turkey" which involved volunteers from various Singapore organizations to give humanitarian aid to Turkey. Through its own network of suporters an dwell-wishers, the Associatiion raised more than S$150,000 in food, medicine and other essential needs. It also donated 200 LPG Portable Heaters to the people of Duzee where a second earthquake occurred in November 1999. Financial subsidy was also given to 30 families who were affected by the two major earthquakes for a period of 12 months.

August 2001 Participated at the Sino-American(UIC) tours at Suntec City.

Sept 2002 Published and launched the first Turkish Cookbook in Singapore.

March 2003 Co-organized and co-sponsored a film production on Turkish Cuisine, jointly with MYI International and Orion-Tour.

April 2003 Fund-raising for Autistic Resource Center. Pariicipated in th eGrand Bazaar organized by the Asian Civilization Museum in conjunction with the exhibition of some of the precious Ottoman artifacts from the Tokapi Museum in Istabul, Turkey. STFA set up a Turkish Teahouse serving traditinal Turkish tea and coffee and cookies. Some of our Turkish members provided fortune reading.

March 2005 A talk on anti-aging at Spans-Jom Clubhouse, followed by lunch.
Turkish cooking class at Cairnhill Community Club.
Fundraising for Assisi Home & Hospice.

Jan 2006 Annual General Meeting & election of office bearers for 2006/2007.

Feb 2006 Chinese New Year lunch for members and friends at Peach Garden, Marina Mandarin Hotel.

May 2006 Lady members helped to make Mid-Autumn festival dumplings for old folks' home.

June 2006 Turkish cooking demonstration.

August 2006 Heritage tours:

Malay Museum at Sultan Gate.

Chinese Heritage Museum at Haw Par Villa.

Indian Temples.

October 2006
Annual Dinner at The Pines.

November 2006
Talk by Mr Anwar Abdul Rashed on the history of Kampong Glam.
